Navigating the evaluation process for your child can feel overwhelming, especially if it’s your first time. To help you feel more confident and prepared, this blog breaks down each step of the process, so you know exactly what to expect. If you have any questions throughout the process, please contact us and we are more than willing to help you through every step.
1. Preparing for the Evaluation
Before your appointment, you will be asked to complete a paperwork packet. If possible, print and fill out the forms ahead of time. You can find the list of paperwork here. This saves time when you arrive. If you’re unable to complete the paperwork in advance, plan to arrive at least 30 minutes early to complete it onsite.
2. Reviewing the Paperwork
When you arrive, the clinician will walk you through the necessary steps to get started. You’ll sign a consent form for treatment, review the financial policies, and make any required payments upfront. Next, the clinician will go over your child’s history, based on the information you’ve provided. You can read more about our certified staff members here.
Some speech therapists prefer to gather history information by asking questions directly during the appointment rather than using pre-filled forms. This approach allows for a more interactive discussion and can help the therapist gain deeper insights into your child’s needs. The method used often depends on the child’s specific situation.
3. Testing Time
After the initial review, the clinician will begin the testing phase. This typically involves one or more standardized assessments, which might look like structured playtime. Don’t worry—this is intentional. Testing is designed to be engaging and comfortable for your child.
Depending on your child’s comfort level and ability to focus, you may be invited to stay in the room or asked to wait outside. This flexibility ensures the best environment for your child to succeed. Testing is usually the longest part of the evaluation process.
4. Reviewing the Results
Once testing is complete, the clinician will take time to score the assessments. During this period, you may be asked to play with your child in the room. Before you leave, the clinician will go over the results and provide specific recommendations tailored to your child’s needs.
If your child qualifies for therapy, you’ll have the option to schedule ongoing treatment sessions. An official evaluation report, summarizing the findings and recommendations, will be sent to both you and the referring physician within a few days.
5. Beginning Treatment
At the first therapy session, the clinician will review the plan of care with you. This plan includes the goals set for your child, and your input will be essential to ensure the plan aligns with your family’s priorities. The therapist will work with you to create a collaborative path forward.
Understanding the evaluation process can help you feel more prepared and at ease. Remember, each step is designed to ensure the best possible outcomes for your child. Don’t hesitate to ask questions or share your concerns with the clinician—they are there to support you and your child every step of the way!
